Assessing the Health of Our Communities
During this time of sweeping health care changes, hospital leaders must be positioned to ensure their ability to provide the right care to the right people at the right time. To achieve this, clinicians and leaders must understand the health status and needs of the communities they serve.
For more than a decade, the quality and safety of health care has been an area of intense national focus. This has led to local, state and federal initiatives that assess and improve the quality of care across multiple care delivery venues. Although various methods of measuring quality are available, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality has developed indicator sets widely accepted by hospitals and public health agencies.
The information contained in MHA’s community health reports should be one of several sources hospital leaders use to determine how best to meet the population-based health needs of the communities they serve. This information and county-based health behavior data provide a broad, but not total assessment, of community health.
